How to prepare for a PAT testing visit

Allow roughly two to three minutes per appliance, so a 30-item visit usually takes an hour to an hour and a half. A bit of preparation keeps it on schedule and makes sure nothing is missed.

Before the visit

  • Make a rough list of appliances by room or floor (the price builder on our home page helps)
  • Check you can access every room, cupboard and plant area
  • Gather spare extension leads and chargers from drawers and storerooms
  • Let staff or tenants know when testing will happen

On the day

Each item needs to be switched off and unplugged for a short time while it’s tested. For computers, ask people to save their work. Servers and essential equipment can be scheduled out of hours.

After the visit

You’ll receive a certificate and an asset register listing every item, its location, results and retest date. Put the retest date in your calendar, keep the register somewhere easy to find, and add any new equipment to it as you buy it.

Tip: label new equipment when it arrives and add it to the register, so it’s included in the next test.
